Brief overview of Gigabit Ethernet in industrial automation

Gigabit Ethernet: For more resilient plant networks

The increasing data volume in industrial networks is increasingly pushing the existing infrastructure to its limits. Operators often underestimate the importance of required bandwidth reserves with which network and system failures can be prevented.

With PROFINET V2.4, data transmission in the gigabit range can be increased. However, a gigabit-capable network infrastructure is a prerequisite. Industrial switches in particular must be able to cope with the new flood of data.

Brief overview of TSN in industrial automation

Time-Sensitive Networking (TSN) forms the basis for delay-free data communication. In addition to the known prioritization of data streams, "fixed data routes" (streams) can be defined or time-uncritical data packets can be split up (pre-emption).

As intelligent data crossovers, industrial switches play a decisive role in real-time critical data communication. Thanks to TSN, plant operators benefit from a previously unheard of cross-manufacturer compatibility.

Brief overview of Conformance Class D (CC-D)

Conformance Class D - for the fusion of PROFINET and TSN

Anyone who wants to take advantage of all the benefits of the new PROFINET specification V2.4 will in future need PROFINET IO devices that support the new Conformance Class D (CC-D). This device classification primarily covers the complex functionalities of TSN.

The new CC-D is based on the previous conformance classes CC-B and CC-C. However, the new Conformance Class D integrates data communication via TSN. The new Conformance Class is therefore a special case.
